My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. The journal, still clutched in my trembling hand, felt impossibly heavy, a burden I had willingly shouldered, a burden that had now led me directly into the serpent’s mouth. "What do you want, Blackwood?" My voice was a ragged whisper, barely audible above the blood pounding in my ears.
