The air in Professor Finch’s study always carried a faint scent of aged paper and something else, something elusive and a little sharp, like the tang of ozone after a distant storm. It was a smell I’d come to associate with revelation, with the edge of understanding that always seemed to hover just beyond my grasp. Today, however, that scent was tinged with a new, unsettling undercurrent, a subtle dissonance that vibrated beneath the surface of his usual calm.

He sat behind his imposing mahogany desk, the afternoon sun slanting through the tall, leaded windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the otherwise still air. His hands, usually so steady as they gestured towards ancient texts, were clasped tightly on the polished wood, his knuckles stark white. His ‘calm serious eyes,’ the ones that had always seemed to hold a deep well of knowledge and a quiet kindness, now held a flicker of something I couldn’t quite decipher – a desperate plea, perhaps, or a carefully veiled warning.

“Elara,” he began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very floorboards. He paused, as if gathering strength, then continued, “I… I have a confession to make. One that concerns not only my own family, but the very history you have been so diligently uncovering.”
