The lock clicked, a sound so delicate it was almost swallowed by the oppressive quiet of my study. It was a sound I’d been dreading, a sound that confirmed my deepest fears. My heart, already a frantic hummingbird against my ribs, lurched. I’d spent the last hour arranging the room, not for comfort, but for consequence.
