Chapter 8
The First Test
Gu Kai faces a more direct confrontation with Vorlag's forces. He must now consciously employ his growing shadow skills, moving beyond instinct to strategic application.
The air in the secluded valley hung thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a stark contrast to the acrid smoke that still clung to Gu Kai’s memory. He stood on a rocky outcrop, the wind tugging at his simple tunic, his gaze fixed on the distant, jagged peaks that marked the edge of the known world. The raw, untamed surges of power that had erupted during the attack on his village felt like a distant, almost alien experience. Now, faced with the deliberate artistry Maeve spoke of, he felt like a child fumbling with a master’s brush.
“Patience, Gu Kai,” Maeve’s voice, soft as falling snow, broke through his introspection. She sat cross-legged on a moss-covered stone nearby, her ancient eyes, sharp and knowing, fixed on him. “The river does not become a raging torrent in an instant. It carves its path, stone by stone.”
