The air, once thick with the scent of burning thatch and the acrid tang of fear, had begun to thin. What remained of Whispering Creek was a skeletal reminder of what had been, a landscape of ash and desolation under a bruised twilight sky. Gu Kai moved through the wreckage, a ghost in his own ruined home, the silence a heavy shroud that pressed in on him. He felt a surge of protectiveness, a fierce, unfamiliar urge to shield them from further harm. But the weight of what he had done, of what he was, settled upon him. He was no longer just Gu Kai, the boy who fetched water and mended nets. He was something else, something dangerous, something that had drawn the attention of monstrous men and, he suspected, something far older and more inscrutable.
