Chapter 14
Echoes of the Past
Following clues from Maeve and his own experiences, Gu Kai seeks ancient sites tied to the Shadow Weavers, hoping to find answers about his ancestors.
The air in the Crimson Peaks was thin and sharp, biting at Gu Kai’s exposed skin. Elder Maeve had spoken of ancient places, of sites where the very earth pulsed with the memory of the Shadow Weavers. She had given him fragmented directions, whispers of forgotten trails and stones etched with symbols only the initiated could decipher. It was a desperate hope, a fragile thread to grasp in the vast emptiness of his unknown past. He’d left Maeve’s secluded hermitage days ago, the scent of dried herbs and the gentle hum of her aura slowly fading with each league he traversed.
His journey had been a solitary one, punctuated only by the rustle of unseen creatures in the dense, gnarled forests and the mournful cry of the wind through barren ravines. The predatory sect, though temporarily thwarted, remained a palpable threat, a shadow lurking just beyond the periphery of his awareness. And then there was Silas, the enigmatic observer, whose presence felt like a constant, silent pressure, a reminder that he was never truly alone, nor truly free.
Maeve’s words echoed in his mind: “The Weavers were not born of this world, Gu Kai. They drew their power from the spaces between, from the hushed secrets the sun never touched. Seek where the light falters, where the earth remembers.” He had spent years living in the dappled sunlight of Whispering Creek, his existence as ordinary as the turning of the seasons. Now, he was deliberately seeking out the places where light feared to tread.
