Chapter 4
The First Shadow
A minor shadow creature attacks Bron's village. He defends it using nascent abilities, realizing the threat is no longer distant but dangerously close.
The Crimson Seal pulsed a faint, steady beat against Bron’s chest, a familiar weight he’d carried since birth. It was a constant reminder of the generations before him, the silent guardians who had woven their lives into the fabric of balance. Tonight, however, the weight felt heavier, a leaden anchor in his gut. The air in the village of Oakhaven, usually alive with the chirping of crickets and the distant murmur of the river, was unnervingly still. A thick, cloying silence had descended, muffling even the rustling leaves of the ancient oaks that gave the village its name.
Bron stood on the edge of the village, his gaze fixed on the dense treeline bordering the Whispering Woods. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in his mind, her voice a low rumble like distant thunder. “The balance is not a static thing, Bron. It is a dance. And when one partner falters, the other must step forward, no matter how unprepared.” He had felt unprepared for weeks, the encroaching unease a constant companion. Now, the unease had sharpened into a prickle of dread.
A faint, guttural snarl sliced through the silence, closer than Bron would have liked. His hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword, a plain, unadorned blade that felt inadequate against the gnawing fear. It wasn’t the fear of the unknown; he had known since he was a child that his family’s duty was to face the unknown. It was the fear of facing it alone.
