The air in the Obsidian Citadel had always been heavy, thick with the dust of ages and the faint, metallic tang of forgotten battles. But now, it was something else entirely. It was a suffocating blanket, woven from despair and the chilling whisper of a thousand dying breaths. Bron felt it pressing in, a tangible weight against his chest, each inhale a struggle against an unseen hand. Maeve’s final words, a soft echo in the cavernous silence of his mind, were his only solace: “The balance is not a static thing, Bron. It is a dance. Her sacrifice, a blinding flash of pure, protective energy that had momentarily pushed back the encroaching darkness, had bought him time. Time to reach the heart of the beast, to sever its source before it could consume everything.
