The chipped Formica tabletop felt cool beneath his forearms, a small comfort in the oppressive heat of the afternoon. He traced the faint, almost invisible scratches on its surface, each one a tiny testament to countless meals shared, arguments had, and quiet moments of contemplation. Here, in this anonymous diner tucked away on a street that seemed to have forgotten the passage of time, he’d found a temporary sanctuary. The hum of the ancient refrigerator, the clatter of dishes from the kitchen, the low murmur of conversations – it was all a soothing balm against the gnawing anxiety that was his constant companion.
He’d been here for three days, nursing lukewarm coffee and picking at plates of food he barely tasted. Each sunrise was a victory, each sunset a reminder of the precariousness of his existence. His eyes, hidden behind the dark lenses of his sunglasses, scanned the street through the grimy window, cataloging every car, every pedestrian, every shadow that seemed a little too deep, a little too long.
A woman’s voice, surprisingly clear and melodic, broke through the ambient noise. “Mind if I join you?”
