The city was a living, breathing entity, a symphony of honking taxis, distant sirens, and the murmur of a million hurried lives. It was a place where a man could disappear, swallowed by the sheer, overwhelming press of humanity. He’d chosen it for that very reason, for the comforting anonymity it offered, a stark contrast to the suffocating quiet of his previous hiding spots. Here, the shadows were not a refuge but a natural extension of the urban landscape, a thousand alcoves and alleyways where he could blend, unseen, unheard.

He found a small, nondescript room above a laundromat in a district that hummed with a life all its own, a place where the scent of detergent mingled with the aroma of street food and the faint, sweet perfume of blooming jasmine from a nearby balcony. It was temporary, of course. Nothing was permanent for him. But it was enough. Enough to breathe, to think, to try and make sense of the jumbled fragments of memory that Stella’s name continued to stir within him.

He’d arrived with little more than the clothes on his back and the small, tarnished locket that bore her name. The inscription was faint, worn smooth by time and touch, but it was as clear to him as if it had been etched yesterday. Stella. The name itself was a whisper of a forgotten melody, a scent he couldn't quite place but that stirred a deep ache in his chest.
