The air in the cramped room tasted stale, a familiar blend of cheap disinfectant and the lingering scent of fear. He’d chosen this place, a forgotten corner of a forgotten town, for its anonymity. The peeling wallpaper, a faded floral pattern that had long since surrendered to time and neglect, offered a flimsy disguise for the gnawing unease that had become his constant companion. She’d paid in cash, her hands trembling as she’d clutched the small, velvet box. He’d learned her name too, a fleeting detail that had lodged itself in his mind: Clara.
