The air crackled, not with the gentle hum of morning dew or the rustle of awakening leaves, but with a raw, untamed energy that made the very bones of the world vibrate. Zelphir, his eyes burning with an almost feverish intensity, felt it surge through him, a symphony of shadow and instinct. Beside him, Vaeltharion stood, a beacon of controlled luminescence, his brow furrowed in a silent, internal struggle. The clearing, once tranquil, now pulsed with the volatile magic that emanated from them, a storm contained within flesh and blood.

“It’s… beautiful, isn’t it?” Zelphir breathed, his voice a low growl that seemed to scrape against the very fabric of reality. He extended a hand, and tendrils of inky darkness unfurled from his fingertips, twisting and coiling like sentient serpents. They writhed in the air, absorbing the scant light that dared to approach, casting deeper, more profound shadows even in the midday sun. “This power. It’s like nothing we’ve ever known. It answers to us.”

Vaeltharion watched, his jaw tight. The light that clung to him, a soft, golden aura, seemed to flicker in response to Zelphir’s display. He raised his own hand, and a single, perfect bloom of pure light materialized, its petals unfurling with a silent grace. But it was fragile, ephemeral, and in the face of Zelphir’s encroaching darkness, it seemed to shrink, to cower. “It answers, yes,” Vaeltharion said, his voice calm, yet laced with a tremor of apprehension. “But what does it demand, Zelphir? What price does this… answering… incur?”
