The night had been a tapestry woven with threads of shared breath and the quiet hum of contentment. Elias lay beside Anya, the gentle rise and fall of her chest a soothing rhythm against his own. It was a stillness he’d long craved, a sanctuary from the cacophony of his own anxieties. Yet, even in this profound peace, the familiar tendrils of self-doubt began to stir, like shadows lengthening in the twilight. He traced the curve of Anya’s shoulder with a fingertip, a silent question hanging in the air: *was he worthy of this?*

He remembered the sting of past rejections, the hollow ache of failed promises. Each one a tiny shard embedded in his heart, whispering tales of inadequacy. He’d built walls, brick by careful brick, around that vulnerable core, convincing himself that it was safer to keep the world at bay, to offer only carefully curated versions of himself. But Anya… Anya had a way of seeing through those defenses, her empathy a warm sun that melted the ice.

He shifted, the movement causing Anya to stir. Her eyes fluttered open, soft and questioning in the dim light. A small smile played on her lips. "Elias?" she murmured, her voice a low, melodic hum.
