The air in the makeshift camp was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and something else, something metallic and faintly acrid that Anya couldn't quite place. She sat huddled by a sputtering fire, the embers casting dancing shadows on the faces of the men gathered around her. Samuel, his usual quiet strength a comforting presence beside her, had explained the situation with his characteristic measured tone. General Al-Faruq’s forces were closing in, their movements swift and brutal. The information Anya desperately needed, the proof that could expose the warlord’s devastating operation, was within reach, but not without a significant risk. The only path forward, Samuel had said, was through the territory controlled by 'The Lion.'

Anya’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the vast, indifferent silence of the night. She had come to South Sudan seeking truth, expecting to navigate a political quagmire, not to find herself on the precipice of a potential battlefield. The faces around the fire were etched with weariness, but also with a steely resolve that mirrored her own growing determination. They were fighters, loyal to a cause Anya was still struggling to fully comprehend, a cause embodied by the enigmatic figure they called ‘The Lion.’

“He will not see you easily,” Samuel said, his voice low, barely disturbing the quiet. “He trusts few. And fewer still from the outside.”
