The humid air hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket that clung to my skin like a second layer. The jungle, once a vibrant symphony of life, had grown disturbingly quiet. Even the incessant buzz of insects seemed muted, as if the very flora held its breath. Lyra, her face a mask of concern, had led me deeper into this verdant labyrinth, promising a shortcut to the penultimate chamber. Now, standing before a curtain of moss-draped vines, a chill, unrelated to the oppressive heat, snaked up my spine.

"This is it, Blake," she’d said, her voice a little too strained. "The entrance. The map indicated a hidden passage here."

I’d trusted her, of course. Lyra, with her sharp mind and uncanny knack for deciphering the arcane, had been my constant companion, my anchor in this maelstrom of ancient secrets and shadowy pursuers. We’d faced down collapsing ruins, outsmarted Vane’s goons, and pieced together fragments of the Serpent’s Cipher, each discovery fueling our shared obsession. But something felt wrong. The silence was too profound, the air too still.
