The midday sun beat down on the sprawling marketplace, turning the air into a shimmering haze that distorted the vibrant colors of the stalls. Spices, piled high in crimson and gold mounds, perfumed the air, mingling with the scent of roasted meats and the less pleasant aroma of animal hides. I moved through the throng, a shadow weaving between merchants hawking their wares and bewildered tourists. My cloak, a familiar weight, offered scant protection from the oppressive heat, but it was a useful disguise, masking my features from the prying eyes that were, I suspected, already scanning the crowd for me.

Lyra had been right, of course. Her intel was usually impeccable, honed by years of sifting through whispers and rumors in the shadowy corners of the world. The Obsidian Hand, Vane’s ruthless organization, wasn’t just interested in the Serpent’s Cipher; they were actively hunting for me, their methods as unsubtle as a charging rhino. The marketplace, a chaotic labyrinth of humanity, was exactly the kind of place they’d expect me to try and disappear into. And that, ironically, was precisely why I’d chosen it.

A sudden surge in the crowd, a wave of panicked shouts, sent a ripple of unease through me. Heads turned, eyes widened, and people began to shove their way through the narrow aisles. My senses, sharpened by years of living on the edge, immediately went into overdrive. The clamor wasn’t just a stampede; it had a directed, almost coordinated quality to it. Someone was creating a diversion, clearing a path.
