Lyra’s whispers, her excited pronouncements about the Serpent’s Cipher, felt a lifetime ago, a distant echo against the palpable dread that now clung to me. This was it. The first true test, as the tattered fragment of parchment had promised. Not just a riddle to solve, but a fortress designed to crush the unwary.

My fingers brushed against a loose stone, and a faint tremor ran through the ground. A shiver, not entirely of fear, traced its way down my spine. This was the kind of challenge that made my blood sing, the kind that separated the seekers from the mere dreamers. But with Silas Vane and the Obsidian Hand lurking in the shadows, there was no room for error, no margin for a misplaced step. One wrong move and I’d be another forgotten casualty, another forgotten whisper in the wind.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed the heavy stone slab inward. It groaned in protest, a sound like a dying beast, revealing a darkness so profound it seemed to swallow the faint light filtering in from the jungle canopy. The air inside was colder, carrying a musty odor that spoke of centuries undisturbed. I drew my trusty machete, its polished steel a comforting weight in my hand, and stepped across the threshold.
