The air in Lyra’s study always smelled of ancient paper and something faintly floral, a scent I’d come to associate with breakthroughs, with the unraveling of silk threads of forgotten knowledge. Tonight, though, the usual comfort was laced with a nervous energy, a hum beneath the surface that mirrored the tremor in my own gut. I’d laid out the fragments of the map, the faded parchment brittle with age, the ink bleeding into illegible patterns. Beside them, a shard of obsidian, cool and unnervingly smooth, that I’d pried from the grip of a fallen Obsidian Hand operative in Marrakesh. It pulsed with a latent power, a silent promise and a dire warning.

“It’s the patterns, Blake,” Lyra murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration, her voice a low, melodic hum. She traced a finger over a particularly intricate swirl on the map, a design that seemed to mimic the coils of a serpent. “Not just the symbols, but the negative space. The emptiness between them. That’s where the true cipher lies.”

I leaned closer, my breath catching. Lyra’s mind was a labyrinth I found myself constantly lost in, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. She saw connections where I saw chaos, patterns where I saw random scribbles. Her expertise in ancient languages and obscure symbology was the key that had unlocked so many doors on this relentless pursuit of the Serpent’s Cipher. Without her, I’d be just another treasure hunter chasing ghosts.
