Chapter 9
A Glimpse of Home
Amidst the alien wonders, Kelly finds a quiet spot. She pulls out a worn photo of her mother, tears welling up. The longing for her mother intensifies, fueling her determination to return home.
Kelly found herself wandering, the vibrant, swirling colors of Lumina a stark contrast to the ache in her chest. The initial wonder of a world where anything could be imagined had begun to fade, replaced by a gnawing loneliness that settled deep within her bones. She longed for the familiar, for the scent of her mother’s perfume, for the sound of her laughter, even for the rough texture of her favorite blanket. It was a hollow ache, a constant reminder of what was lost.
She found a secluded nook, a small alcove carved into a luminescent rock that pulsed with a soft, internal light. The air here was still, undisturbed by the gentle hum of the planet’s creative energies. It was a perfect place to hide, to let the tears she’d been holding back finally fall. From the depths of her small, tattered backpack, she carefully withdrew a faded photograph. It was creased and worn, the edges softened by countless touches, but the image within was as clear as if it had been taken yesterday. Her mother, her bright, beautiful mother, was smiling, her eyes crinkling at the corners, her arm slung around a younger, beaming Kelly.
Kelly traced the outline of her mother’s face with a trembling finger. "Mom," she whispered, her voice a fragile thread in the alien stillness. "I miss you so much." The words were barely audible, swallowed by the immensity of her grief. She remembered the warmth of her mother’s hugs, the way she’d always know exactly what to say to make Kelly feel better, even when the world seemed too big and too scary. Now, on this strange planet, surrounded by impossible creations, she felt more alone than ever.
