Chapter 4
Whispers in the Woods
While venturing through a peculiar forest, Kelly overhears two alien guards. Their hushed conversation reveals a sinister plot to guide her to a specific tree, where she will be transformed into a permanent fixture.
The air in the forest was thick with the scent of something akin to damp earth and sweet, unfamiliar blossoms. Sunlight, filtered through leaves that shimmered with an iridescent, almost metallic sheen, dappled the mossy ground in shifting patterns of emerald and gold. Kelly, her small backpack feeling heavier with each step, ventured deeper into this strange, created world. It was a world that hummed with a silent, vibrant energy, a place where imagination seemed to have taken root and bloomed into reality. She had seen creatures that defied every zoological textbook, watched entire villages spring from the ground as if conjured by a playful deity, and even glimpsed the nascent borders of nascent countries being drawn in the dust by their visionary inhabitants. Yet, beneath the wonder, a familiar ache persisted – the hollow echo of her mother’s absence, the sting of her father’s new smiles directed elsewhere.
She walked with a tentative curiosity, her eyes wide, absorbing every detail. The trees here weren't like the sturdy oaks or whispering pines of home. Their bark swirled with colours, blues and purples and fiery oranges, and some bore leaves that glowed with a soft, internal light. Strange, crystalline flowers unfurled their petals to the filtered sun, emitting chimes like tiny, delicate bells when a gentle breeze stirred. It was beautiful, undeniably so, but it was also alien, and the loneliness that had driven her from her father's house felt amplified here, a vast, silent ocean in which she was adrift.
She paused, listening. The usual sounds of the planet – the soft rustling, the distant melodic calls of unseen creatures, the gentle hum of growth – seemed to recede for a moment, replaced by something else. Voices. Low, hushed, and close. Her heart gave a little jump, a mixture of caution and a desperate hope for another living soul, even if it was one of the planet’s creators. She crept closer, her small frame melting into the shadow of a particularly large, sapphire-barked tree.
