The tiny plant, no taller than Frances’s thumb, pulsed with a soft, emerald light. Its delicate leaves unfurled further, revealing a pattern of shimmering veins that seemed to trace constellations. Frances, still kneeling in Lily's garden, felt a strange warmth spread from her fingertips, where she’d first touched the seedling, all the way to her toes. It was a feeling both comforting and exhilarating, like the first sip of hot chocolate on a cold day, but laced with a hint of something wild and unknown.

“You… you can talk?” Frances whispered, her voice barely a rustle of leaves. She glanced around, half expecting her mother to appear, to scold her for talking to plants. But the garden was quiet, save for the gentle buzzing of a bumblebee hovering near a rosebush.
