The television screen flickered to life, casting a pale, flickering glow on the faces of the two young girls huddled on the worn carpet. Dorothy’s ruby slippers clicked against the yellow brick road, a vibrant splash of color against the monochrome of their reality. Kimberly watched, her small body rigid, her gaze fixed on the fantastical world unfolding before her. The Munchkins, the Wicked Witch, the Scarecrow with his floppy hat – it was all so… unreal. A stark contrast to the chilling phone call that had just ended, the words still echoing in the cavernous silence of the house. “Your mother… in a terrible car crash.”

The pronouncement hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Kimberly’s sisters, their faces streaked with tears, wept openly, their small bodies wracked with sobs. Their grief was a tidal wave, crashing over them, pulling them under. But Kimberly remained on the surface, a solitary island in a sea of sorrow. Her own tears, if they existed, were trapped behind a dam of years, a fortress built brick by brick from the ruins of her early life. She had learned to compartmentalize, to lock away the pain, to present a calm, unruffled exterior to the world, even as her insides churned with a silent, agonizing storm. The cacophony of emotions from her sisters, their raw, uninhibited weeping, was almost a relief. It drowned out the deafening roar of her own suppressed anguish, a familiar symphony of chaos that had, paradoxically, become her refuge. She watched the Wizard of Oz, the vibrant colors on the screen a stark contrast to the muted tones of her own existence, and wondered if they would ever find their way home.

The phone call had come as a shock, a sudden, jarring interruption to the mundane rhythm of their afternoon. Grandmother, her face a mask of grim news, had delivered the devastating blow with a chilling detachment that belied the gravity of her words. Kimberly remembered the way her grandmother’s voice had cracked, a brief tremor before the icy resolve returned. “Your mother… she was in a terrible car crash.” The words had landed like stones, heavy and cold, shattering the fragile peace of their afternoon. Her sisters had erupted into a torrent of tears, their cries of anguish filling the room. But Kimberly, as always, had remained outwardly still, her gaze fixed on the television screen, a silent observer of the unfolding drama. The Wizard of Oz, in all its technicolor glory, played on, a bizarre counterpoint to the tragedy that had just struck their family.
