The air in Dr. Finch’s study, usually a haven of hushed contemplation and the comforting scent of aged paper, now felt thick with an almost suffocating stillness. Isaac sat opposite his mentor, the weight of the revelation pressing down on him like a physical force. The ancient tome lay open between them, its brittle pages illuminated by the single desk lamp, but Isaac’s eyes were fixed on Dr. Finch’s face, searching for a flicker of recognition, a sign that this was all some elaborate, misguided prank.

“You… you’re one of them?” Isaac’s voice, usually strong and confident, was a mere whisper, barely disturbing the charged silence. The words felt alien, impossible, like accusing the sun of setting in the east. Dr. Finch, the man who had guided his nascent journalistic career, who had nurtured his curiosity, who had spoken with such passion about the pursuit of truth – could he truly be a part of the shadowy organization Isaac had begun to suspect, the very group that seemed intent on burying the very history he was trying to unearth?

Dr. Finch’s expression was unreadable, a mask of practiced composure that Isaac had always admired. Now, it felt like a betrayal in itself. The faint lines around his eyes, which Isaac had interpreted as the hallmarks of wisdom and deep thought, now seemed to etch a map of secrets. His hands, usually clasped in a gesture of gentle contemplation, were now still, almost unnervingly so.
