The air in Sophia Bellweather's study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something akin to forgotten incense, a subtle perfume that clung to the ancient texts lining her walls. Isaac felt a curious sense of calm settle over him, a welcome respite from the gnawing unease that had become his constant companion. He’d found Sophia through a hushed recommendation from a university archivist, a name whispered with a mixture of reverence and caution. Her reputation preceded her: a savant of dead languages, a guardian of forgotten scripts.

Sophia herself was a study in quiet intensity. Her eyes, the colour of warm amber, held a depth that suggested she saw far beyond the surface of things. Her hands, slender and precise, moved with an innate grace as she gestured towards a worn leather-bound tome resting on a velvet cushion. “You say you’ve found passages that… resist translation?” she asked, her voice a low, melodic hum that resonated with the stillness of the room.

Isaac nodded, unrolling a sheaf of photocopied fragments he’d carefully preserved. “Yes. These symbols, they appear in different contexts, but they seem to form a coherent narrative, a different one, perhaps. My usual methods, even with the help of some linguistic databases, are failing.” He gestured to a particular sequence of interlocking circles and sharp, angular lines. “This one, in particular, feels like a key, but to what lock, I have no idea.”
