Chapter 7
A River of Riddles
Their next task from Barnaby is to cross a babbling brook, but the stepping stones only appear when a riddle is answered correctly. Maya's sharp mind and Leo's accidental insights work together.
Leo, with Maya trailing a respectful but slightly exasperated distance behind, found himself staring at a brook that seemed to chuckle at their predicament. It wasn't a raging torrent, more of a cheerful, gurgling stream, the kind that might tempt a duckling into a daring swim. But for Leo and Maya, it was an impassable barrier, at least according to Barnaby the badger, who had, with a theatrical sniff and a flick of his surprisingly well-groomed tail, declared their next trial.
“The Whispering Brook,” Barnaby had announced, his voice like gravel being tumbled in a cement mixer, “is not for the faint of heart, nor for those who can’t think on their feet. Or, rather, on their stones.” He’d gestured with a claw towards the water, where not a single stone was visible, only the shimmering surface reflecting the dappled sunlight filtering through the impossibly green canopy. “Cross it, you shall proceed. Fail, and you’ll be wishing you’d stayed home to polish your doorknobs.”
Maya, ever the pragmatist, had immediately begun scanning the banks for fallen logs or sturdy branches. Leo, meanwhile, was already visualizing himself slipping, tumbling, and being swept downstream in a cascade of embarrassing splashes. His stomach did a little flip-flop, a familiar sensation that usually preceded some minor disaster.
