Chapter 5
Barnaby's First Absurd Test
Barnaby, the grumpy badger, declares no one enters his forest without passing his trials. His first challenge: to fetch a feather from a bird that only sings backwards. Leo and Maya exchange bewildered glances.
Barnaby the badger, a creature whose fur seemed perpetually ruffled by an invisible, grumpy wind, stood squarely in their path. His beady eyes, the colour of polished acorns, narrowed as he surveyed Leo and Maya. A low growl rumbled in his chest, sounding suspiciously like a kettle about to whistle. "Halt!" he barked, his voice like gravel being poured down a drainpipe. "No one, and I mean no one, enters Barnaby's forest without passing Barnaby's trials."

Maya, ever the pragmatist, stepped forward, her arms crossed. She’d been expecting something like this. Barnaby’s reputation preceded him, whispered in hushed tones by the few brave (or foolish) souls who’d dared to venture near the forest's edge. “And what exactly are these trials, Mr. Barnaby?” she asked, her tone polite but firm. She secretly suspected Barnaby was just a grumpy old badger who’d eaten too many fermented berries.
