It felt like they’d shed a skin, emerging from a chrysalis of whispered secrets and badger-induced chaos into the ordinary glow of a Tuesday afternoon. Leo’s mom, her face a familiar landscape of gentle smiles, bustled in the kitchen, humming a tune that was decidedly not backwards.
“Leo! Maya! You’re back,” she chirped, wiping her hands on her apron. “Did you have fun at Alinka’s? You were gone for ages.”
Ages. It felt like a lifetime, and yet, also like it had happened in the blink of an eye. Leo glanced at Maya, her eyes sparkling with a quiet understanding that had bloomed between them like a secret flower. They exchanged a knowing smile. “It was great, Mom,” Leo managed, his voice sounding a little too high-pitched for his liking. “Alinka showed us some cool stuff.”
