Back near the forest's edge, they encounter Alinka, a curious girl from the nearby village, drawn by rumors. She's intrigued by Leo and Maya's tales and Barnaby's unusual presence.
The air, still buzzing with the faint, lingering scent of moss and a hint of Barnaby’s exasperated sighs, felt different as Leo and Maya ambled back towards the familiar edge of the woods. It was a comfortable quiet, a shared understanding that settled between them like a well-worn blanket. Leo, for once, hadn’t tripped over a rogue root or bumped into a particularly sturdy-looking fern. His feet seemed to have developed a newfound respect for the terrain, a subtle shift that made him feel almost… graceful. Maya, too, carried a different lightness, a spark in her eyes that spoke of a newfound willingness to embrace the unexpected, a trait she’d been carefully cultivating. Barnaby, the gruff guardian of the Secret Forest, had even managed a sort of gruff nod of approval as they’d departed, a monumental achievement in itself.
They were just beginning to discuss the merits of Alinka’s surprisingly accurate imitation of a hiccuping squirrel when a voice, bright and clear as a little bell, cut through the afternoon air.
