Maya's Bold New Step

Maya felt it first, a subtle shift in the air, like the breeze before a summer storm, only much, much nicer. It was the feeling of possibility, a fizzy, effervescent sensation that tickled her toes and made her want to skip. And Maya, the queen of sensible pacing and well-plotted out steps, wanted to skip. It was a revelation. Just yesterday, the thought of an unplanned detour would have sent her into a mild panic, her carefully constructed itinerary crumbling like a poorly made biscuit. But after her spontaneous leap across the chasm of chattering squirrels, something had clicked. The world hadn’t ended. In fact, it had opened up.

She looked at Leo, who was currently attempting to tie his shoelaces for the fifth time in as many minutes, his brow furrowed in concentration. He’d managed to tie them into a knot that resembled a very angry pretzel. “Leo,” she said, her voice lighter than usual. “Are you sure about that particular knot?”

Leo looked up, his eyes wide. “It’s… it’s a new technique. For extra security. In case of… rogue shoelaces.” He gave a triumphant tug, and the pretzel knot promptly unfurled, one lace whipping him gently across the cheek. “Oh. Right.”
