Barnaby, the badger, sat back on his haunches, his bushy tail twitching with an almost theatrical sigh. The air in the clearing, usually thick with the scent of damp earth and pine needles, now felt charged with a different kind of magic, one that wasn't about shimmering spells or wish-granting trees. Leo, still a little wobbly on his feet from his last tumble, and Maya, her brow furrowed with a mixture of confusion and dawning understanding, waited. Alinka, who had mostly been observing with wide, curious eyes, shifted her weight, eager for an explanation.

“So,” Barnaby began, his voice surprisingly gentle, lacking the usual gravelly edge that had so intimidated them just hours before. “You’ve gone and done it. You’ve reached the heart of the Secret Forest.” He gestured with a paw, not towards any particular tree, but to the very space they occupied, the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves, the gentle hum of insects, the feeling of quiet contentment that had begun to settle over them.

Leo blinked. “But… the wish? The map said…” He trailed off, his gaze falling to the crumpled parchment in his hand. It looked less like a treasure map now and more like… well, just a very old piece of paper.
