Chapter 11
Barnaby's Hidden Laughter
Observing their struggles and triumphs, Barnaby lets out a rare, rumbling chuckle. He admits, begrudgingly, that they're more capable than he initially thought, a hint of warmth in his voice.
Barnaby the badger, a creature whose perpetual frown seemed etched into his very fur, peered from behind a particularly gnarled oak. His beady eyes, usually narrowed in suspicion, were currently fixed on the two bipedal intruders floundering in his domain. Leo, bless his perpetually tangled shoelaces, had just managed to trip over a perfectly flat patch of moss, landing with a soft *oof* that sent a startled ladybug spiraling through the air. Maya, ever the pragmatist, was attempting to extricate a stray bramble from Leo’s already-dishevelled hair, her face a mask of exasperated affection.
The scene was, to Barnaby's seasoned badger-eyes, a masterpiece of unintentional comedy. He’d seen it all, of course. The overly eager adventurers who’d tried to bribe him with acorns (as if he’d eat such pedestrian fare!), the terrified youngsters who’d dissolved into tears at the mere sight of his formidable jowls, and the pompous scholars who’d tried to out-riddle him (a foolish endeavor, as Barnaby’s mind was a labyrinth of ancient forest lore). But Leo and Maya… they were a different breed.
Leo’s clumsiness was legendary, a symphony of misplaced feet and airborne limbs. Yet, there was an undeniable sweetness to his stumbles, a genuine desire to do no harm that always seemed to precede his tumbles. And Maya, with her sensible braid and her even more sensible pronouncements, was the perfect foil. She’d tried to map their progress with a twig and a patch of mud, her brow furrowed in concentration. She’d patiently explained the physics of a rogue gust of wind to Leo after he’d been nearly blown into a patch of particularly sticky spiderwebs. They were a peculiar pair, and Barnaby found himself, much to his own consternation, a little bit… amused.
