Detective Miller stood in the stark, sterile quiet of the interrogation room, the fluorescent lights humming a low, irritating tune. Across the table, Aunt Carol sat, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Her face, usually a mask of carefully maintained composure, was now a roadmap of fear and desperation. The initial shock of her arrest had begun to recede, replaced by a gnawing dread that flickered in her eyes.

“Mrs. Peterson,” Miller began, his voice calm, measured, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing within the woman before him. “We’ve been through this. The children, Leo and Mia, they found them. In your basement.”

Carol flinched, her gaze dropping to the chipped Formica tabletop. A single tear traced a path down her cheek, but she didn’t sob. It was a silent, weary release. “I… I don’t know how they got down there. I always keep it locked.”
