The click of the gate latch was a sound that usually meant freedom, a promise of escape from the stifling quiet of their aunt’s house. But this time, as Aunt Carol’s car pulled away, its tires crunching on the gravel drive, the sound felt more like a seal, locking Leo and Mia into a newly amplified silence. The air, already thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, seemed to press down on them, heavy with unspoken things. Leo watched the taillights disappear down the winding lane, a knot of apprehension tightening in his stomach. He glanced at Mia, who stood beside him, her arms wrapped around herself as if to ward off an invisible chill. Her eyes, usually bright with a spark of defiance, were shadowed with a familiar unease.

“She’s really gone,” Mia whispered, her voice barely audible.

Leo nodded, his gaze still fixed on the empty space where the car had been. “For a long time, she said. The whole afternoon, maybe longer.”
