The midday sun beat down on the caldera, its intensity usually a balm to Elias’s spirit, a vibrant splash of life against the stark white of his studio walls. But today, the warmth felt brittle, a thin veneer over something cold and unseen. He watched Elara trace the weathered lines of a fallen column, her fingers light as butterfly wings against the ancient stone. The silence between them was no longer comfortable; it was taut, stretched thin like a canvas before the first brushstroke.

“This inscription,” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper against the distant sigh of the sea, “it speaks of guardians. Of a hidden path.”

Elias leaned closer, his silver streak catching the sunlight. He’d seen these ruins a hundred times, each time a familiar landscape of memory and artistic inspiration. Now, they felt alien, imbued with a new, unsettling significance. He recognized the script, an archaic dialect he’d studied in his youth, but Elara’s understanding was unnervingly intuitive. It was as if the very stones whispered their secrets to her.
