The air in Master Dubois’ shop, usually a comforting blend of rose and sandalwood, felt thick with unspoken anxieties. Elara traced the rim of a small glass vial, her fingers brushing against the cool, smooth surface. Inside, a pale amber liquid shimmered, holding within it the echo of forgotten laughter and the sharp tang of a half-remembered fear. Julian had been a whirlwind of hushed urgency when he’d arrived that morning, his usually cheerful demeanor overshadowed by a grave concern. He’d brought with him a sheaf of brittle, yellowed papers, each one a testament to a history Elara was only beginning to understand.

“The Valois family,” Julian had begun, his voice low, his eyes scanning the antique perfume bottles lining the shelves as if searching for a hidden culprit, “they have a… long and complex relationship with the art of perfumery. More complex than most people realize.”

Elara had leaned closer, her own senses tingling with anticipation. She trusted Julian implicitly. His passion for the history of scents was as genuine as her own love for creating them, and he possessed a meticulous mind that could sift through dusty archives and unearth the most elusive truths.
