Chapter 5
Echoes of the Past
Elara’s experiments continue, revealing more fragmented memories. She realizes the scent doesn't just recall personal recollections but seems to touch upon historical events too.
The little glass flacon, cool and smooth beneath Elara’s fingertips, seemed to pulse with a quiet energy. Each day, she returned to it, drawn by an invisible thread. Master Dubois, bless his patient heart, had given her free rein in the small, sun-drenched attic room where she kept her experiments, and she cherished the quiet hours spent there. Today, the air was thick with the mingled aromas of rose petals, crushed lavender, and something else, something elusive and ancient that clung to the very walls.
She carefully measured a single drop of the crimson-tinged liquid onto a testing strip, the familiar, almost heartbreakingly beautiful scent unfurling in the air. It was like stepping into a dream. A fleeting image shimmered at the edge of her mind: a woman in a long, flowing gown, her hair piled high, laughing as a gust of wind lifted a silk scarf. Elara blinked, and the vision dissolved, leaving behind only the lingering perfume and a faint echo of joy.
This was more than just her own memories, though. Yesterday, while testing the scent on a tiny sliver of parchment, she’d caught a whiff of something that felt distinctly… historical. It wasn't a personal memory, but a sense of a grand ballroom, the rustle of silk, the murmur of hushed conversations, and the distant strains of a waltz. It was as if the scent held not just individual recollections, but fragments of time itself, captured and preserved like insects in amber.
