Chapter 18
The air in the grand ballroom of the Hôtel de Ville shimmered with a thousand perfumes, a dizzying, delightful symphony that Elara had orchestrated with her own hands. Tonight, however, the usual cacophony of expensive florals and musks was about to be subtly, exquisitely, rearranged. Clutched in her palm, concealed within a velvet pouch, was the delicate glass flacon, its crimson blossoms like tiny, sleeping embers. Master Dubois had given it to her with a worried frown, his words a gentle warning about the power held within such fragile glass. “Some memories,” he’d murmured, his eyes crinkling, “are best left undisturbed, Elara.” But Elara, with her uncanny nose and a heart that yearned for truth, knew that sometimes, undisturbed was precisely the problem.
The gala was a dazzling spectacle. Chandeliers dripped with crystal, casting a warm, buttery light on the swirling silks and starched collars of Paris’s most influential families. Laughter, like tinkling champagne bubbles, rose and fell. Elara, dressed in a simple, elegant navy gown that made her emerald eyes stand out, felt a thrill of nervous anticipation. Beside her, Julian, his usual academic tweed replaced by a sharp, dark suit, offered a reassuring smile. “Ready to conduct your orchestra?” he whispered, his voice a low rumble that somehow cut through the din.
