Chapter 10
The Lure of the Deep
Silas sets a trap, using knowledge of the Lumina's habits against it. Elara, guided by Marina and her own intuition, races against time to thwart his plans before the creature is lost forever.
The air in the hidden cove tasted of brine and secrets. Elara, her heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs, followed Marina along the slippery, seaweed-strewn rocks. The moon, a sliver of pearl in the inky sky, cast long, dancing shadows that played tricks on the eyes, making the familiar seem alien and the unknown all too real. Silas’s trap, Marina had whispered, was cunningly laid, a snare woven from the very habits of the Lumina, the creature that was as much a part of the ocean’s breath as the tides themselves.
“He knows where it rests when the moon is at its highest,” Marina’s voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. “He’s learned its rhythm, like a predator learning the sleep cycle of its prey.”
Elara’s breath hitched. The thought of the Lumina, so pure and ethereal, ensnared by Silas’s greed, was a cold dread that seeped into her bones. The perfume, the scent that had become her compass, her link to a forgotten life, was born from the Lumina’s very essence. To lose it now, before she could fully understand, felt like losing herself all over again.
