The morning sun, usually a warm embrace through the stained-glass windows of their home, felt sharp and accusatory today. Elara watched from the top of the grand staircase, her heart a leaden weight in her chest. Below, in the bustling breakfast room, her brother Liam was a whirlwind of misplaced confidence. Gone was the thoughtful, slightly shy young man who loved to discuss the latest botanical discoveries with their father. In his place stood a peacock, preening and strutting, his voice a booming instrument of self-importance.

“Honestly, Father,” Liam declared, slicing through his toast with unnecessary force, “this whole business with the new orchard expansion is frankly pedestrian. I have far grander ideas, ideas that will truly put our family name on the map. Think bigger, Father, think brighter!” He gestured expansively with his knife, narrowly missing their mother’s outstretched hand as she reached for the jam.

Their mother, normally so serene, flinched. “Liam, darling, your father has put a great deal of thought into this. It’s a sound investment, one that will secure our future.”
