Pip, a bundle of sleek, tawny fur, twitched his nose, his whiskers quivering with a wisdom that belied his mischievous nature. He padded softly across the worn rug of the family parlor, his small paws making barely a sound. Elara watched him, her heart a tangled knot of worry and hope. The air in the room felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the lingering, acrid scent of Liam’s recent selfishness. Her brother, usually so bright and eager, had been a stranger for days, his kindness replaced by a sharp, uncharacteristic self-absorption that had wounded their parents deeply.

Pip paused beside Liam, who sat slumped in an armchair, his gaze fixed on a distant, unseeing point. The ferret nudged Liam’s hand with his wet nose, a gentle, persistent pressure. Liam flinched, then looked down, his eyes momentarily clearing of the haze that had settled upon them. For a fleeting second, Elara saw a flicker of the Liam she knew – the one who would tease her about her perfume experiments, the one who would always offer a comforting arm. But it vanished as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a familiar impatience.

“What is it, Pip?” Liam muttered, pulling his hand away. “Can’t you see I’m busy?”
