Chapter 11
Confrontation in the Garden
Elara finds Anya in the family garden, attempting to administer another potent scent. Elara confronts her cousin, holding the calming balm protectively.
The late afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across the manicured hedges of the family garden. It was Elara’s favorite place, a sanctuary of blooming roses and the gentle hum of bees, usually filled with the sweet, honest scents of nature. But today, a different, acrid aroma pricked at her nostrils, a discordant note in the garden’s usual symphony. Pip, nestled securely in the crook of her arm, gave a tiny, agitated sniffle, his whiskers twitching. He knew it too. Something was wrong.
Elara’s heart hammered a nervous rhythm against her ribs as she crept through the rose bushes, her eyes scanning the familiar pathways. She’d followed Pip’s insistent tugs and sniffs, his nose leading her away from the workshop, past the quiet library, and now, here, to the very heart of their home. And there, by the old stone fountain, she saw her. Anya.
Her cousin stood with her back to Elara, a small, dark vial clutched in her hand. The air around Anya shimmered with a faint, almost invisible mist, and the disturbing scent Elara had detected grew stronger. Anya raised the vial, as if to uncork it, her shoulders tense with an uncharacteristic eagerness. Elara’s breath hitched. Anya was trying to administer another dose of something potent, something dangerous.
