The air in the cramped, windowless room hung thick and still, a perpetual twilight that had long ago leached the color from Sophie's world. Days bled into nights, marked only by the faint scrape of Liam's boots on the floorboards above, the clink of a plate being left outside her door, and the hollow echo of her own breathing. Each sunrise, a concept she could only recall from a life lived outside these four walls, felt like a cruel taunt. The vibrant greens of the forest, the boundless blue of the sky, the warm glow of sunlight on her skin – these were now ghosts, figments of a memory too painful to grasp for too long.

She traced the rough, unpainted wood of the wall with a numb finger. How long had it been? Weeks? Months? Years? Time had become a slippery, unreliable thing, like trying to hold onto mist.
