Mia, always observant, harbors a growing suspicion about Liam. His behavior seems off, and she can't shake the feeling that he knows more than he's letting on about Sophie's disappearance.
Mia’s gaze flickered, an almost imperceptible shift, as she watched Liam interact with the others. The frantic energy of the past few days had begun to settle, replaced by a gnawing unease that clung to Mia like the damp mountain air. Sophie was gone. Vanished. And Liam, who had been right there, who had vanished himself for a moment during the chaos, now spoke of her with a forced sadness that felt hollow.
They were huddled around a meager fire, the embers casting long, dancing shadows against the rough bark of the ancient pines. Tom was trying to keep their spirits up, his voice a little too loud, a little too cheerful. Leah huddled closer to the flames, her eyes wide and darting, as if expecting something to leap from the darkness at any moment. James, ever the quiet one, poked at the fire with a stick, his brow furrowed in thought. And then there was Liam, his face a mask of concern, but Mia saw it – a flicker of something else in his eyes when he thought no one was looking. A glint that was too sharp, too knowing.
“It’s just… it’s so strange,” Liam said, his voice soft, almost a whisper against the crackling fire. “One minute she was there, and the next… gone. Like she just… evaporated.”
