A Web of Deceit

The air in the small, windowless room was thick and still, carrying the scent of damp earth and forgotten things. Sophie traced the rough, cold stone of the wall with a fingertip, a motion she’d repeated countless times. Days blurred into nights, marked only by the meager meals slid through a slot in the heavy wooden door. The silence was the worst, a vast, echoing emptiness that swallowed her whispers and her pleas. She remembered the sunlight, the rush of wind, the laughter of her friends, but it all felt like a dream now, a vivid, cruel memory that mocked her present reality. How long had it been? Weeks? Months? The world beyond this room had ceased to exist, replaced by the gnawing ache of hunger and the deeper ache of loneliness. She thought of Mia, her best friend, so full of bright ideas and fierce loyalty. Would Mia even remember her? Or had they all forgotten about Sophie, lost in their own journey to the mountain's peak? The thought was a sharp jab, more painful than any physical discomfort.

Meanwhile, back on the mountain trail, a different kind of silence had settled over the remaining four. The frantic energy of Sophie’s vanishing had slowly ebbed, replaced by a weary confusion. Liam, his face a mask of concern that never quite reached his eyes, was the picture of a supportive friend. He’d joined in the panicked shouts, the desperate searches, his voice a little too loud, a little too eager. He’d even offered to go back down the mountain alone, a brave offer that Tom, practical and worried about their dwindling supplies, had quickly dismissed.

“No, Liam, we stick together,” Tom had said, his brow furrowed. “We need to get to the next checkpoint. Maybe someone there saw something.”
