Chapter 5
A Friend's Disappearance
Amidst the frantic pursuit and confusion, another child vanishes. Liam, who was part of the group, is suddenly missing. No one notices his absence as their focus remains solely on Sophie.
The air, once crisp with the promise of adventure, now thrummed with a frantic, animalistic fear. Sophie’s scream, sharp and piercing, had ripped through the relative quiet of the mountain trail, shattering the illusion of safety. The children, their faces a mixture of terror and disbelief, stumbled after the black-suited figure, a blur against the rugged terrain. Branches whipped at their faces, rocks skittered beneath their feet, but the desperate need to reach Sophie propelled them forward.
Tom, his brow furrowed with exertion and worry, shouted, “Sophie! We’re coming!” His voice was tight, strained, a sound of pure desperation. Mia, her usually cautious nature overridden by a surge of adrenaline, was a step ahead, her eyes fixed on the fleeting shadow of the kidnapper. Leah whimpered behind them, her small frame trembling, the sheer horror of the situation threatening to buckle her knees. James, his athletic build usually an advantage, found himself struggling to keep pace with Mia’s frantic sprint, his quiet intensity now a mask for a rising panic.
They pushed on, their lungs burning, their legs aching, the path ahead a chaotic jumble of roots and uneven ground. The black-suited figure seemed to melt into the dense foliage, a phantom that taunted their efforts. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of hope and renewed terror through them. Was that him? Were they gaining? The questions echoed in their minds, unanswered, each second stretching into an eternity.
