The forest floor, once a familiar carpet of fallen leaves and soft moss, now seemed to hold its breath. A hush had fallen, heavier than the mountain mist, as Mia and Sophie emerged from the treeline, blinking in the sudden, bright sunlight. They were back. After all these years, they were back. Leah, Tom, and James, who had been gathered near the old, gnarled oak, their faces etched with a mixture of disbelief and a hope they’d almost forgotten, stared. Stared as if at ghosts, at phantoms conjured from the deepest recesses of their memory.
Leah was the first to break the silence, a strangled gasp escaping her lips. Her eyes, wide and brimming with unshed tears, darted between the two figures. Sophie, thinner than they remembered, her hair a paler shade of gold, her eyes holding a shadowed depth that hadn’t been there before. And Mia, her familiar, determined face now softened with an almost unbearable relief, her arm securely around Sophie’s shoulders.
“Sophie?” Leah whispered, her voice trembling like a leaf in a gale. “Is it… is it really you?”
