Escape from Darkness

The splintered wood of the cabin door groaned in protest as Mia pushed it open, a sliver of the outside world, blindingly bright and impossibly real, spilling into the musty darkness. Sophie blinked, her eyes, accustomed to the perpetual gloom, watering furiously. Years had etched themselves onto her small face, deepening the lines of fear and isolation, but beneath it all, Mia saw the spark of the friend she remembered, a flicker of defiance refusing to be extinguished.

“Come on, Soph,” Mia whispered, her voice rough with emotion. She reached out, her hand trembling, and gently squeezed Sophie’s arm. The skin felt fragile beneath her touch, like a bird’s wing. “We have to go. Now.”

Sophie nodded, her gaze darting around the cramped, dirt-floored room that had been her prison. The crude cot, the empty bowls, the single, barred window that offered only a sliver of sky – each detail screamed of a life stolen. A shiver ran through her, a primal instinct to flee, to escape the suffocating reality of her captivity.
