Chapter 14
The Door Ajar
Mia discovers an old, dilapidated cabin, almost hidden by the dense foliage. A faint light emanates from within, and the door is slightly ajar, revealing a sliver of darkness.
The air grew thick with an unspoken tension, a miasma that clung to Mia’s clothes and settled in her throat. Days had bled into weeks since Sophie had vanished, a gaping wound in the fabric of their lives. The mountain, once a symbol of adventure, had become a monument to their grief and confusion. They had searched, of course, their voices raw from calling Sophie’s name, their eyes stinging from the relentless sun and the salt of their tears. But the mountain offered no answers, only the mocking whisper of the wind through the pine needles. Liam, who had been with them that fateful day, had simply… faded. One moment he was there, a blur of frantic energy amidst the panic, the next he was gone, swallowed by the same wilderness that had claimed Sophie. No one had noticed. In the desperate scramble, the sheer terror of Sophie’s disappearance, Liam’s absence had gone unremarked, a ghost in their midst.
Now, years later, the mountain still held its secrets, but Mia’s heart refused to let go. A nagging intuition, a persistent whisper in the quiet hours, had drawn her back. Not on a grand expedition, but a solitary trek, a pilgrimage of sorts. She walked the familiar, overgrown paths, her boots crunching on fallen leaves, each step a question mark. The water bottles were long gone, the thirst for answers far more potent than any physical need.
The forest, once a vibrant tapestry, now felt muted, as if holding its breath. Mia pushed aside a curtain of ivy, her breath catching. There, nestled in a hollow, almost invisible beneath a tangle of ancient branches and moss-laden rocks, stood a cabin. It was a ruin, really. The wood was grey and splintered, the roof sagged like a weary sigh, and the chimney was a crumbling sentinel. Yet, from within its dilapidated shell, a faint light flickered. A hesitant, amber glow, like a dying ember struggling to stay alive.
