The air grew thick, no longer just with the scent of pine and damp earth, but with a heavy silence that had settled over Mia like a shroud. It had been years, so many years, since Sophie had vanished from the mountainside, swallowed by the shadows that Liam, in his chilling deception, had woven around them. Yet, the memory, sharp and painful, still pricked at Mia’s heart. She stood at the edge of the known path, the main trail of the hike that had once promised adventure, now a grim reminder of what had been lost. Before her lay a tangle of undergrowth, a wall of green that seemed to pulse with secrets. This was it, the place the old park ranger had mentioned, a trail so overgrown it was barely a whisper on the map, a forgotten artery of the mountain.

Mia’s fingers traced the rough bark of a gnarled oak, its branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. She remembered James, always so quiet, his eyes darting around, taking in everything while saying so little. He’d been the athletic one, the steady presence who never complained, but Mia had always sensed a keen awareness beneath his calm exterior. Had he, in his silent way, ever noticed this hidden trail? Had he seen anything that day, anything that might have pointed to Sophie’s fate, or indeed, Liam’s sinister part in it? The thought sent a shiver down her spine, a cold echo of the fear she’d felt when Liam had suddenly disappeared from the chaotic scene of Sophie’s abduction. They had all been so focused on the black-suited figure, on the desperate chase, that no one had registered Liam’s absence. It was a detail that had gnawed at Mia for years, a small, persistent doubt that had finally blossomed into a horrifying certainty.

She pushed aside a curtain of ivy, its leaves cool and damp against her skin. The path, if it could even be called that, was barely discernible. A few scattered stones, a faint indentation in the earth, and the persistent encroachment of wild roses, their thorns like tiny daggers, guarding whatever lay beyond. Mia took a deep breath, the scent of wild mint filling her lungs. She was here to find answers, to pierce the veil of deception that Liam had so carefully constructed. She had to believe Sophie was still alive, trapped somewhere in the darkness of Liam’s making. The thought of Sophie, her bright laughter silenced, her adventurous spirit dimmed, fueled Mia’s resolve.
