Chapter 2
Chapter 2: The Whispering Woods
What Happened: They trek through the Whispering Woods, sensing they are being watched.
The map’s golden light acted like a beacon, pulling Sarah and Joseph away from the safety of the suburbs and into the dense, encroaching darkness of the Whispering Woods. The transition was jarring; the sounds of the neighborhood—distant laughter and rustling leaves—faded, replaced by a heavy, unnatural silence.
As they pushed deeper, the trees seemed to shift, their gnarled branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The air grew thick and humid, carrying a strange, cloying scent that was half-earthy forest and half-baked dough. Every few steps, the wind would pick up, whistling through the canopy with a sound that mimicked the rhythmic crunch of a thousand cookies being crushed underfoot.
Joseph kept his flashlight beam low, his jaw set in a firm line as he scanned the shifting shadows for traps. Sarah, however, was mesmerized. She held the map aloft, watching as the golden ink swirled and reformed, guiding them toward the heart of the woods. "Do you hear that, Joseph?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustling trees. It wasn't just the wind; it was a low, melodic hum, a siren song of sugar and spice that seemed to vibrate in their very bones. They were no longer just walking through a forest; they were being drawn into something ancient, hungry, and waiting.
